Today is the opening for 'Sum of the parts' the Fda final year show being held at North Devon College of Art, Pottington Ind Est Barnstaple. Its open for the whole of June and I have work on show with other ceramicists, Illustrators and Fine Artisits.
This piece, 'Ivy', has been created from porcelain paperclay and is detailed with oxide prints and text.
I draw my influence from the natural world and from mans interaction with it, the effect that weather and climate has on geology and ecology shaping everything around us is reflected in the torn edges, warped folds and varying thickness of the work. The intention of my work is to capture and reflect the beauty and simplicity of natural forms and the landscape.
Each piece is handcrafted, slight variation in shape can occur when in the kiln and under going processes of heat and pressure which can create contortion.
I enjoy making extremely thin pieces with egg shell qualities which when once high fired to 1260 oc has a translucency which brings a new dimension to the piece whilst maintaining structural strength.
My work is created using my own formulation of porcelain paper clay. I enjoy challenging the materials and my own making skills, transferring techniques I have learnt within textiles and fine art to the ceramic medium.
